Space and artworks

Venue: Artizon Museum
Dates: July 27th - October 14th

Artworks, neatly arranged in museum galleries, are now public objects open to the public. However, if we look back at the time when these works of art were created, we can see that they were born out of a relationship with their owners, whether they were crafted as fixtures for a mansion or painted to decorate a private room. Some pieces have also passed through many hands and been passed down over time. This exhibition features 144 pieces from the Ishibashi Foundation Collection, spanning a wide range of genres from ancient times to the present, from East to West, including works by Monet, Cézanne, Tsuguharu Foujita, Ryusei Kishida, and the Rinpa school, as well as abstract paintings, allowing us to imagine and experience the context in which these works of art were created, how they were treated, and how they have been passed down over time.

Listening to the earth, its presence and texture

Venue: Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum
Dates: July 20th to October 9th

This exhibition introduces five contemporary artists whose work is deeply connected to nature. Their works, capturing wildlife, the livelihoods of mountain people, the ever-changing landscapes and vegetation, the brilliance of life, and the wonders of nature, are filled with the fresh joy of artists who live in harmony with nature. At the same time, they vividly evoke the various facets of nature, sometimes violently baring its fangs and sometimes devising shrewd survival strategies, and reveal a sense of awe and respect for nature beyond human control that tends to become diluted in urban life. Born not in untouched wilderness but in places where nature and human life intersect, these works also reexamine the relationship between nature and humans. Since ancient times, humans have closely observed and listened to the workings of nature, developing techniques for coexistence over the ages. These works, created by venturing into nature, being moved by it, and coming into contact with the local climate, convey the breath of the earth, which is often difficult to hear in a human-centered lifestyle. The nature and human conditions that come into contact with the artists' keen senses, which allow them to capture even the faintest signs, will awaken our own "sense of life."
